Our mission

Our mission is to educate the world about the African continent, and to promote knowledge of African history, entrepreneurship, and economic growth on the African continent.

Our vision

Our vision is to amplify the voice of the most eligible narrators of the African story, the Africans themselves, and to connect Africans to their shared history,  and to one another both on the continent and in the diaspora.

ABOUT US

I, AFRICA™ was founded by Ida Adjivon in 2017. The organization launched on March 13, 2017 at the Cornell University Afrik Fashion Show. Ida founded I, AFRICA™ out of a need to redefine what “Africa” means in the global eye, to challenge the many misconceptions about the African continent and its people, and to learn about the continent herself. She experienced a dissonance in how she herself experienced the continent and how the world sees it.

The first project by I, AFRICA™ was entitled I, AFRICA™: The Introduction. This project was a photo-series with a number of Africans on the Cornell Campus with the purpose of exploring the question “what does Africa mean to you?”

The success of this project proved that the interest of participating in a space as the one that I, AFRICA™ creates, was present. People were already having conversations around the misconceptions of the African continent and they were ready to do something about it.

Over the years I, AFRICA™ has been working on evolving to best fulfill its mission. In 2020, the organization is publishing an artistic journal filled with works of art by African women both on the continent and in the diaspora.

Ida and her team are excited to continue to evolve the organization, and to continue to learn about the continent and its people.
